Smart Outdoor Living: Lighting, Audio, Video and Control for Your Backyard

  • Blog

Houston backyards get used most of the year, often well after dark. Here's how landscape lighting, outdoor audio and video, strong Wi-Fi and one control system turn outdoor spaces into a true extension of the home.

In Houston, the backyard isn't a seasonal space. Patios, pool decks and outdoor kitchens get used for much of the year, and often after dark once the heat of the day breaks. Yet many homes still treat the outdoors as an afterthought, with a couple of floodlights, a portable speaker and a TV signal that drops halfway across the yard.

With some planning, outdoor spaces can work as smoothly as any room inside, all from the same app, keypad or remote you already use.

Landscape lighting that sets the scene

Outdoor lighting changes how a property looks and feels at night. Accent lights on trees, stonework and water features give the yard depth. Path and step lights guide guests safely between the house, the pool and the driveway. Wall and pendant fixtures make covered patios and outdoor dining areas comfortable places to linger.

The difference between good and great outdoor lighting is usually control. Instead of a row of switches by the back door, lighting can turn on at sunset, follow a schedule through the evening and switch off at sunrise. Scenes let you shift the whole yard from a quiet evening to a party with one touch. Color-tunable fixtures can even match the mood, whether that's warm white for dinner or something brighter for a celebration.

Lighting also supports security. A well-lit driveway, entry and perimeter makes the property easier to see and less inviting to unwanted visitors, and it helps outdoor cameras capture useful footage.

Outdoor audio that covers the whole yard

One portable speaker on the patio table either blasts the people sitting next to it or barely reaches the pool. A planned outdoor audio system solves both problems. Weather-rated speakers are spread across the space and placed to blend into the landscaping, so music sounds even from the grill to the far side of the yard.

Because outdoor audio is part of the same whole-home audio system as the rest of the house, you can play one playlist everywhere for a gathering, or keep the backyard on its own source while someone else listens inside.

Weatherproof TVs and outdoor video

Game day, movie night by the pool or just keeping an eye on the score while you cook: outdoor video has become a favorite feature in Houston homes. We install weatherproof, anti-glare televisions built for Texas weather, and we conceal or trench the wiring so the finished space looks clean.

Outdoor displays connect to the same sources and control as your indoor TVs, so there's no separate box, remote or app to figure out.

Wi-Fi that reaches the edges of the property

Outdoor speakers, cameras, lighting control and the phones in your guests' hands all depend on a strong network. A single router inside the house rarely covers the back of the yard. A properly designed network places access points so coverage extends to patios, pool areas and other outdoor zones without dead spots. Learn more in our guide to a secure smart home network.

Pool, spa and comfort controls

Pool and spa controls can be integrated into the same system, so you can turn on the spa or set the pool lights from the same interface that runs the music and landscape lighting. Pool and water-feature lighting can shift brightness and color for evening swims or entertaining. Electric fireplaces can also be part of the outdoor scene on cooler evenings.

The specific equipment and level of integration depend on what's already installed, so this is something we review together during design.

One system for indoors and out

The goal is simple: the backyard should be as easy to use as the family room. Our Connected Living tour shows how outdoor spaces fit into whole-home control alongside the kitchen, media room and primary suite.

Plan before the landscaping goes in

Outdoor technology is easiest and cleanest to install before hardscape and landscaping are finished, when wiring paths and fixture locations can be planned rather than worked around. If you're building, renovating or redoing the yard, now is the right moment to talk.
